Fresno summers are no joke. From late June through mid-September we routinely hit 100°F+, and Bermuda, fescue, and St. Augustine lawns all react differently. After mowing thousands of yards from Old Fig Garden to Sunnyside, here is the schedule we actually use on our route.
Mow weekly, but raise the deck
Most Fresno homeowners cut their grass too short in summer, thinking it will mean fewer mows. The opposite happens: short grass scorches, the soil dries out, and weeds explode along Bullard sidewalks within two weeks.
We mow weekly at 3 to 3.5 inches for cool-season lawns and 1.5 to 2 inches for Bermuda. Taller blades shade the crown and lock moisture in, a small change that saves Woodward Park lawns every July.
Water deep, water early
Fresno's clay-heavy soil holds water well once it soaks in, but it sheds shallow watering right off the surface. Two deep cycles per week beat seven shallow ones every time.
- Run sprinklers between 4:00 AM and 6:00 AM, before the wind and heat pick up
- Aim for ~1 inch of water per week, split across two sessions
- Use the cycle-and-soak trick: 10 minutes on, 30 minutes off, 10 minutes on
Edge every visit, Fresno HOAs notice
If you live in a Fresno HOA neighborhood like parts of Woodward Park or Copper River, the edge line is what people see from the street. Crisp edging along driveways and walkways is what separates a 'nice yard' from a 'wow yard'.
Don't skip the August sprinkler check
By August, half the broken heads in Fresno are spraying the sidewalk instead of the lawn. We do a free walk-and-test on every Fresno route account in early August, a 10-minute check that saves brown patches in September.
